Self-Assembled Monolayers


The surface of MEMS components are generally the result of material processing, (deposition , etching) with uncontrolled properties. By designing specific nanolayers as thin as 1 nm, surface properties are optimized, leading to many potential advantages:
  • Reliability improvement
  • Sensitivity increase (sensors)
  • Flow enhancement (microfluidics)
  • Better adhesion between layers
    These layers are obtained by the deposition of tailor-made molecules, having one end specifically reactive with substrate and the other end giving the final surface properties.
    Self-orientation of molecules on the surface and covalent bonding with the substrate ensure the formation of  "molecular carpets" resistant to solvents, temperature, vacuum and inducing no stress to the material.
